While living in Tokyo back in 2008, mother nature would occasionally interrupt my beauty rest with the oh-so-subtle rumblings of an earthquake. They were so common that, despite being surrounded by towering skyscrapers, I began not to worry much about it. However the devastation caused by the earthquakes in March 2011 served as a stern reminder that the forces of nature are always out of our control, and I channeled those feelings of uncertainty and instability into this book design. Tokyo Underground takes a scientific look at not only the history of earthquakes in the Tokyo region, but also some of the amazing technologies and ideas that Japanese minds have come up with to handle these monstrous forces.
