A lizard sitting at the bar wearing a Hawaiian shirt glances your way as you order a drink. Small men in matching tuxedos flee across the desert as the sky shatters to reveal a gargantuan cave plunged in darkness. These are just a few of the fantastical sights you can find in films by Terry Gilliam, a director, animator, and man of many talents. To honor his amazing and mind-bending work, I devised a fictional Terry Gilliam film festival around the concept of opening doors to new worlds and new possibilities. Aptly named “Portals,” the festival celebrates four films spanning his career using a visual style that is anything but expected.
